SIM-free and unlocked: what is the difference?
SIM-free means the phone is sold on its own, without a carrier SIM card or a contract. Unlocked means it is not tied to one carrier, so it can work with a SIM or eSIM from another network. Most SIM-free phones are unlocked, but not all of them: a phone bought from a carrier and sold without its SIM can still be carrier-locked.
Before you buy, ask the seller whether the phone is unlocked and which carriers it has been used with.
Which model number do you have?
- SM-A536U1: the US factory-unlocked model.
- SM-A536U: the US carrier model. It may be locked to the carrier that sold it unless it has been unlocked.
- SM-A536B, SM-A536B/DS and SM-A536E: international models. Check that they support your carrier's network bands before buying.
The model number is under Settings > About phone, and is often in the listing title.
What to check on a used Galaxy A53
- IMEI: ask for it and check it is not reported lost or stolen and has no unpaid device balance.
- Carrier lock: confirm the phone is unlocked or works with your carrier.
- Factory Reset Protection: the seller must sign out of their Google and Samsung accounts, or the phone will ask for their password after a reset.
- Screen: look for scratches, cracks and burn-in on the AMOLED display.
- Battery and charging: ask how long the battery lasts and confirm the USB-C port charges.
- Condition: compare the listing's stated condition (new, open box, used, renewed) with the photos, and message the seller with any questions.
